SIZES
To fit baby’s head sizes 12 mos (18 mos-2 yrs)
MATERIALS
Bernat® Cottontots (100 g /3.5 oz; 156 m/171 yds)
1 ball each of:
Contrast A (90012 Country Taupe)
Contrast B (90007 Sweet Cream)
Small quantity of 90531 Country Red for embroidery.
Size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Small amount of sport weight black yarn for embroidery.
GAUGE: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
Note: When working with 2 colors within row, or working from chart, wind small balls of the colors to be used, one for each separate area of color. Wind colors around each other where they meet on WS to avoid a hole.
With A, cast on 69 (73-77) sts.
Work 9 rows in stocking st.
Next row (fold line): (WS). Knit.
Next row: (RS). With A, K19 (21-22). With B, K31 (31-33).
With A, K19 (21-22).
Next row: With A, P19 (21-22). With B, P31 (31-33).
With A, P19 (21-22).
Rep last 2 rows 6 (6-7) times more.
Place chart: Next row: (RS). With A, K19 (21-22). Work 1st row of chart across next 31 (31-33) sts. With A, K19 (21-22).
Next row: With A, P19 (21-22). Work 2nd row of chart across next 31 (31-33) sts. With A, P19 (21-22).

Beg with a purl row, work 3 rows even.
Next row: K1. *K2tog. K5 (5-6). ssk. Rep from * 5 times more. K1. 44 (44-50) sts.
Beg with a purl row, work 3 rows even.
Next row: K1. *K2tog. K3 (3-4). ssk. Rep from * 5 times more. K1. 32 (32-38) sts.
Purl 1 row.
Next row: K1. *K2tog. K1 (1-2). ssk. Rep from * 5 times more. K1. 20 (20-26) sts.
Size 2 yrs only: Next row: Purl 1 row.

All sizes: Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely.
Ears (make 4).
With A, cast on 9 sts.
1st row: (WS). Purl.
2nd row: Inc 1 st in first st. Knit to last 2 sts. Inc 1 st in next st. K1. 11 sts.
3rd to 5th rows: Beg with a purl row, work 3 rows even.
6th row: K1. ssk. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
7th row: Purl.
8th and 9th rows: As 6th and 7th rows. 7 sts.
Cast off.
With WS facing tog, sew 2 Ears tog. Sew cast off edge of Ears to each side of Hat as shown in photo. With black yarn, embroider eyebrows with outline stitch, then eyes and nose with satin stitch.
With Country Red yarn, embroider mouth with chain stitch.
Sew center back seam. Fold facing to WS along fold line and sew in position.
