This is the day I officially began my health journal. It has evolved a little since then, but I think you'll see how I started using it to track my life with diabetes.
This is the day I officially began my health journal. It has evolved a little since then, but I think you'll see how I started using it to track my life with diabetes.
As a side note:
My left big toe was amputated on August 25th, 2007. I was released from the hospital on August 30th attached to a wound vac and hopping around with a walker. I was depressed and scared when I left the hopital.
My entry is as follows:
My blood sugar was 131 when I got up at 7:00 a.m. I had no meds last night per the doctor's orders when I left the hospital.
Breakast:
1 egg
1 sausage
1 yogurt
2 cups chocolate soy milk
1/4 cup dried bananas
I am so afraid that I will eat the wrong things!!!
Mom and Dad are here. They are worried about me, but I'm a little stressed out.
12:20 p.m. my blood sugar was 233.
I called my endocrinologist's office because I am scared of this high reading. I am so afraid that something is going wrong with my foot.
The person who anwered the phone at the doctor's office said I was trying to be treated without ever having seen the doctor. I told her she had treated me in the hospital and had told me to call with questions or concerns. I had already been set up for an office appointment for the following week. The woman still didn't like that I wanted to ask the doctor a question. I finally asked for her name and then asked if she would just like me to hang up. She decided that wasn't necessary and transferred me to a nurse.
Later I got a call back from the nurse telling me that the endocrinologist was adding Amaril to be taken at supper along with the Metformin I'm taking twice a day. It's already been called into the pharmacy.
I did not need that stress of the first lady on the phone!
At 1:30 p.m. my blood sugar was 242.
Lunch was:
Roast Beef
3 Slices Tomatoes
1 Cup Green Beens
3:00 p.m., I took a pain pill
6:00 p.m. my blood sugar was 311.
I cried.
Took an Amaril pill per the nurse's instructions once they were picked up from the pharmacy.
7:10 p.m. my blood sugar was 191.
Supper:
Hamburger
3 Slices Tomatoes
1 Cup Spinach
15 Grapes
10:00 p.m. my blood sugar was 123.
Thankful the medicine change seems to be working.
Had a snack of 15 grapes.
It was a roller coaster day of fear. I am going to sleep in the recliner to keep my foot elevated and to keep the wound vac cord from getting pinched. It's very uncomfortable and awkward. How did I let this happen?
Home Health was here today to assess me. A nurse will be here tomorrow to change the wound vac dressing. I'm dreading that. It hurts more than I can describe.

That was my first day home as a newly diagnosed diabetic with an amputated toe. I hope you'll come back as the rest of my story unfolds.
