No birthday cake...
Yesterday was my birthday and I feel a little cheated.
I turned 43 and certainly am not a little girl anymore. I still wanted a birthday cake though. Yet, there was a voice in my head telling me to be good and pass it up.
To be fair, my sister did offer to bake me one. I told her not to go to the trouble. My nephew had a track meet that we all planned to go to. I would just consider that my celebration. I don't have children and I love to go watch him in his activities anytime I can.
Still, my mind was filled with birthday cake as I was there. I even joked that I wondered if the concession stand sold birthday cake. Instead I let myself have some way too salty concession stand popcorn and a diet pop.
It was a very cold evening for a track meet. I had hoped for a lovely spring evening to bask in so I wouldn't be thinking of chocolate cake with chocolate icing. We joked that we were sitting on a beach in Hawaii with tropical drinks instead of in our winter coats covered in blankets. It still was nice to see my nephew do well in his events. I'm not just being the proud aunt when I say he really has speed.
After the track meet, we went to a Chinese buffet. I have been to this one before and I know it doesn't have a lot of good choices for me, but I tried to make the best of it.
Amazingly, would you believe that a Chinese buffet does not have birthday cake either? :-)
I'm just trying to make light of my craving for birthday cake. I think it is one of very few of my birthdays that has passed without me having one. It didn't really feel like my birthday without one. Silly, isn't it?
However, I knew I didn't need the calories or the extra carbs and sugar. Still a little part of me feels cheated. I can't say that I've found anything fun about diabetes. Somehow, you just have to make the best of it. It robbed the joy of a birthday cake from me, but it didn't take away the joy of spending the evening with my family.
That's the big picture when you think about it. Diabetes may turn your life upside down, but it can't stop the joy that others bring you. You really don't need birthday cake for that anyway.
Thanks for reading.
