When Haidee S. Merritt contacted me about her new book, One Lump Or Two, I quickly requested a review copy of this collection of witty cartoons for diabetics. Merritt is a diabetic herself and brings an unique perspective paired with a wonderful sense of humor to her drawings. Read on for a glimpse of her handiwork.
There really isn't a cartoon in this book that I didn't identify with. Merritt has been a diabetic since childhood. She freely admits that she wasn't always a good patient. She says, "I've traded in denial as my favorite coping mechanism and chosen humor, it seem to be much more productve."
I do agree with her that finding humor in the diabetic lifestyle makes it easier to cope with. Merritt has accomplished that quite easily with One Lump Or Two.
One Lump Or Two is a book that I find myself going back to again and again. It is so "me", if you know what I mean. I think you will have no problem identifying with the humor too.
Merritt says the reason she did One Lump Or Two was because, "Diabetes isn't just a disease, it's a lifestyle. There's so much social stigma attached to it now and it's widely misunderstood by the general public. I want everyone with diabetes to have a copy of this book on their shelves so they can share a few laughs and know they're not alone. It's important for everyone to know this book isn't about me complaining about my life or how diabetes has wrecked it, but, really, accepting and embracing it."
